Floriade preparations are well underway
On 14 April 2022, the International Horticultural Exhibition Floriade Expo 2022 will open its doors. For six months, visitors will be able to tour modern horticulture and experience how city centres can be made greener, more sustainable and liveable. Visitors will become acquainted with the journey from seed or cutting to the food on their plates, and will find out more about horticultural innovations that can make cities greener. With its theme: ‘Growing Green Cities’, Floriade Expo 2022 is more modern and contemporary than ever.
Over 25 countries will present their concepts and innovations for a sustainable, green future. Entries from Europe, Asia, Africa and the Middle East. Floriade only takes place once a decade and will this year be held in Almere, in the province of Flevoland, the most recently developed province in the Netherlands.
Floriade truly centres on horticulture. A large proportion of our food is cultivated in horticulture and due to population growth, global demand for food is increasing. Innovations can contribute to meeting this rising demand in a sustainable manner, and the Province of Flevoland is very conscious of this fact. Take the Noordoostpolder, for instance, where there are many fields of tulips and other regional products are cultivated. Or think of Oosterwold in Almere, the largest urban agriculture area in the Netherlands where inhabitants produce local food for ditto use as part of a co-op. The neighbourhood is the perfect example of Floriade’s themes actually put into practice. In other words, horticulture provides greenery for cities in the shape of trees, plants and flowers. The Expo provides wonderful examples of horticultural innovations in the fields of greenery, food production, health and energy.
The art pavilion M. at the Expo merges architecture, art and nature. Enjoy stimulating experiences both indoors and out. The pavilion, designed by Studio Ossidiana, is a precursor to a new art museum in Almere and will act as a pilot project for at least five years. The art museum will be built in Almere for a reason. After all, the city is internationally renowned for its modern architecture designed by world famous architects. Almere is also referred to as an open-air architectural museum.
Floriade is easy to reach by public transport. Take a relaxing train trip. In Almere’s city centre, a 10-minute walk from the railway station, there is a tour boat waiting for you which will transport you straight to the Expo and back again. Naturally, you don’t have to travel back immediately. Stay at one of the sustainable hotels or bed & breakfasts, and take a bike ride the following day along the 440 km of separated bike lines, using the signposted route network. From April 2022 onwards, there will even be a boat network!
Floriade Expo 2022
From 14 April – 9 October 2022, Almere will be the stage for the International Horticultural Exhibition Floriade Expo 2022. Dutch horticulture will then present innovations and solutions for sustainable, liveable cities in cooperation with national and international partners. The theme ‘Growing Green Cities’ will be central at the 60 hectare site. The latter is situated a short trip from Amsterdam, immediately adjacent to the A6 motorway with a view of Almere’s skyline.
Urbanisation is changing our world fast. The Netherlands is one of the most densely populated, most urbanised countries on the planet and the pressure is noticeable. How do we deal with the challenges we will face? ‘Growing Green Cities’ will take you to the city of the future. Floriade Expo 2022 will help you discover the green solutions that will make our cities more fun, beautiful and sustainable. Immerse yourself in host city Almere and the rest of Flevoland as a living lab and tourist destination. The campaign surrounding the theme ‘Growing Green Cities’ is a cooperation between Almere City Marketing, Visit Flevoland, Floriade Expo 2022 and NBTC. Floriade Expo 2022 will show you how green a city can be.
