German National Day at Floriade Expo 2022
The German Garden is one of the highlights of the International Horticultural Exhibition. On 29 July, Germany will celebrate its National Day at the International Horticultural Exhibition Floriade Expo 2022 in Almere, the Netherlands. Felice & Cortes, who combine atmospheric guitar music with artistry and show elements, and percussion ensemble Greenbeats will perform at the official ceremony on the Main Stage from 14:30. Dr Katharina Böttcher, Head of the Market Department at the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL), will also attend the ceremony, together with Floriade Commissioner General, Annemarie Jorritsma-Lebbink.
The motto of Floriade Expo 2022 is ‘Growing Green Cities’. In the run-up to German National Day, Dr Katharina Böttcher explained: “Floriade Expo 2022 is focusing on a global issue of the future. More and more people around the world are living in megacities. This calls for new answers, especially with regard to climate change, but also to a better quality of life in our cities. The German Garden aims to show possible ways towards a sustainable and liveable urban future. In doing so, we invite visitors on a journey into the green city of tomorrow that is as entertaining as it is informative.”
The German Garden has been presenting a varied cultural programme around the German National Day since 25 July. It ranges from live performances by German artists, such as the performance duo Felice & Cortes or the DJ collective LEKKA LEKKA, to short film sessions on climate change, discussion rounds with the German Designer Club and lectures on biodiversity monitoring of birds, which uses Artificial Intelligence. In addition, the Community of European Buckfast Beekeepers will hold a bee workshop and open the two Buckfast bee hives, which are on the rooftop garden of the German Garden, to the public. Buckfast bees are a particularly peace-loving and industrious bee colony that produces above-average yields.
Both exhibition and garden inspire
The German Garden ’BIOTOPIA – Growing Community’ is one of the most popular exhibits at Floriade Expo 2022 and has welcomed around 300,000 visitors so far. In addition to numerous school classes, travel groups and trade visitors, this also included high-ranking delegations from more than 15 countries, including Argentina, India, Italy, Japan, Spain, Thailand and the United Arab Emirates. The German Garden is also active online and posts activities on its Instagram channel.
With its surrounding wooden pavilion, whose green facades are gradually growing over, and the atrium in the centre, the German Garden already architecturally symbolises a sustainable coexistence of nature and city. The exhibition encourages visitors to create their own vision of a city of the future. In doing so, it conveys innovative ideas for modern horticulture in an entertaining way and presents best practice examples from Germany as well as approaches to solutions for a greener future in cities.
