Youth Future Conference over Growing Green Cities

It’s time to ring the alarm for a sustainable world. How can we involve young people in shaping solutions to turn the tide? From Friday 2 July to Sunday 4 July 2021, the hybrid Youth Future Conference will take place in Center Parcs De Eemhof and in the Food Forum, the pavilion of the Province of Flevoland, at Floriade.

Sixty young people will start with the theme of Floriade Expo 2022 ‘Growing Green Cities’ and 10 sustainable development goals (SDGs) to work together on action-oriented solutions that lead to a greener, more liveable and sustainable city and world.

  • GROWING – SDG 2, SDG 3, SDG 12: No Hunger, Good Health & Responsible Consumption
  • GREEN – SDG 6, SDG 13, SDG 14 and SDG 15: Climate & Biodiversity
  • CITIES – SDG 7, SDG 9, SDG 11: Renewable Energy, Innovation & Infrastructure & Sustainable Cities and Communities
Working together with young people

“Just like in the Province of Flevoland, where the new landscape was created by people, we want to contribute to enriching landscapes during this Youth Future Conference. Through all kinds of different hands-on experiences and labs we are getting closer to our goal, namely to create innovative and sustainable living landscapes, where people and nature can live together in a responsible way, with respect for the environment and for our mother earth, and for all those generations that will come after us. And we need the help of our young people for that!” says Jean Henkens, landscape architect at Center Parcs and spiritual father of the Kids Climate Conference.

“With its theme ‘Growing Green Cities’, Floriade Expo 2022 offers a wonderful momentum to pay attention to sustainability and the SDGs of the UN. To achieve these sustainability goals requires acceleration. We notice that young people have an increasingly strong intrinsic motivation to actively contribute to this. A world horticultural exhibition such as Floriade gives us the opportunity to increase the involvement and role of young people. During the Youth Future Conference, we want to use their creativity and brainpower and enable them to make an active contribution to sustainability”, says Yoël Schuller, manager of Management Advice and Projects Floriade Expo 2022.

Youth Future Conference

The Youth Future Conference is the successor of the Kids Climate Conference that has been organized since 2012 and focuses on young people between 11 and 16 years old. The initiators are Center Parcs and the World Wildlife Fund with main partner Missing Chapter Foundation.

For the edition in 2021 and in 2022, the world horticultural exhibition Floriade Expo 2022 is affiliated as the main partner. The British Embassy in The Hague is also a partner this year to ensure the link to the international climate conference COP26 in Glasgow in November. The province of Flevoland contributes to the project from the SDG programming for Floriade-wide and their focus on food innovation. Students from Aeres (v)mbo Almere act as buddies to help the young people to arrive at their end product during the event.

In 2022, the participants will physically come together at Floriade Expo 2022, where the results in 2021 will be elaborated in a similar format. The results of both events will be widely shared with large companies, policymakers and politicians.
